Review: The Shadow Queen by C.J.Redwine

The Shadow Queen
Author: CJ Redwine
Published On: 2-16-16
Page Count: 387

Synopsis: (Found on Goodreads)
Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.
In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman…and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

Overall Rating: 5/5
I love retellings with twists. CJ has done it again with strong characters that all have amazing back stories. Highly recommend for fans of her other series as well as adults who want to live their childhood over again in darkness.

Cover: 5/5
I think the black galaxy apple already represents the story being retold, and it already has a different twist.

Characters: 5/5
Lorelai - The crown princess and fugitive, she is Snow White. Lorelai’s biggest weakness is that she doesn’t believe she is strong enough to defeat the evil queen, Irina. Her character is fierce and a leader, though she relies on the strength of those close to her.

Prince Kol - The neighboring kingdom of Eldr brings the perfect twist to this Snow White retelling, Kol, a dragon huntstman. Attempting to save his own kingdom from ogres, he strikes a deal with the evil queen. His only mission is to destroy Lorelai, a girl who saved his life, once upon a time.

Plot: 5/5
Kol’s mission is to kill Lorelai, while hers is to reclaim her kingdom from Irina.Lorelai fights with everything she has until there is nothing left for her to lose. Fast paced and full of magic, The Shadow Queen retells Snow White in a way that mixes the TV series Once Upon A Time, and the Snow White and the Huntsman.

Quotes:
“You don’t go into battle because you’re sure of victory. You go into battle because it’s the right thing to do.”
“A warrior doesn’t focus on the odds stacked against her. She focuses on her heart, on her will to face the evil in her world and defeat it, and then she finds a way to do it.”

TTFN,
Ashley
