Top Ten Tuesday Books We Wish Were Taught in Schools

Top Ten Tuesday Books We Wish Were Taught in Schools

We thought it would be wise to tell you readers that both Sean and I took AP (Advanced Placement) classes and Honors for English. We had summer reading which consisted of two books and book report most of the time.

Sean:

1)      Ender`s Game by Orson Scott Card

I read this for an AP class but I think all freshmen should read it.

2)      The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien

An introduction into different worlds for students that have creative imaginations.

3)      Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling

The whole series would be a great addition to anyone’s reading knowledge but I don’t want to force down a whole series down someone’s throat. It shows a strong character development and can teach kids a thing or two about doing the right thing even if it isn’t popular.

4)      The Summer I became a Nerd by Leah Rea Miller

This book needs to be on the required reading list because the whole story is about being true to yourself and that true friends will be there for you in the end no matter what.

5)      Across the Universe by Beth Revis

There hast to be a fun read during the year or the students will just burn out even faster.

Ashley:

1)      Our Town by Thornton Wilder

Then they can also watch the Compton High School Production of the play

2)      1984 by George Orwell

I picked this book up as a pleasure read and I think teens should read about Big Brother. Teachers could teach about a dystopian world and how we should be grateful for what we have.

3)      Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt

She proves that teenagers can function without the use of technology. It doesn’t matter the era you are born in. Teenagers go through the same problems.

4)      A Midsummers Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare

This instead of Romeo and Juliet. The book teaches people not to believe everything they see.

5)      Lord of the Flies by William Golding

It shows how even on an island hierarchy rules.

  1. I still have not read Ender's Game or 1984, even though they've been on my To-Read list forever! :) I thought about Across the Universe when I was making my list, glad someone said it. And definitely Lord of the Flies. Read it on my own - scary as hell to think of what savages we all really are! Great lists.

    1. Ender's Game is a must must read. It's a great Sci-Fi and little different from the normal YA genera. Also if you read Enders Game there is a movie coming out soon.

  2. There are a lot of good books on this list! I got to read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in College. I never read The Lord of the Flies for school, but I knew a bunch of people who did. I read it on my free time.

Thanks for stopping by my blog

    1. I thought Lord of the Flies would be perfect for this list because of it's summation of human nature. It's a great read without its teaching element and I believe people would then enjoy it.
