Review: Wandering Star by Romina Russell

Wandering Star
Author: Romina Russell
Published On: 12/8/15
Publisher: Razorbill
Page Count: 352

Synopsis: (Foundon Goodreads)
But news has spread that the Marad--an unbalanced terrorist group determined to overturn harmony in the Galaxy--could strike any House at any moment.
Then, unwelcome nightmare that he is, Ochus appears to Rho, bearing a cryptic message that leaves her with no choice but to fight.

Cover: 5/5
Wandering Star fits Zodiac perfectly. Highlighting the houses that will be talked about most. The colors are vibrant and I can only assume the HC will be totally strokeable. I love that the title actually is referenced in the book and that there are little details added in that get used.

Characters: : 5/5
Rhoma: She is brave even when torn down. Romina shows us all of Rho's flaws and self-doubt. As readers we are able to experience the emotions Rho has so deeply thanks to that. She is relatable in the sense that she makes mistakes and questions her choices.

Hysan: He might make me swoon but Hysan just has this bad attitude about everything and he is not holier than Rho which he is constantly making himself out to be. He makes mistakes as does she but seriously his views need to be a little more focused than just on gut instincts.

Nisa: As Rho's best friend she has stood by her through everything and in WS she shines so bright in making decisions along with Deke. They fight for what they believe in and never question inter-mixing of houses. She is strong and in her moments of weakness you get punched in the gut hard.

Ochus: I still really dislike the being. He has an agenda obviously but it's still unclear where his true loyalties lie. Rho is able to catch glimpses of him actually having a heart and caring for something other than total control.

Plot: 6/5
I can't say much because this is book 2 so go read Zodiac. But the Houses all need to unite and stop pretending one House is better than the other.

Overall Rating: 6/5 ( I instagramed by initial thoughts)
This might be a sci-FI story but Romina's words ring true in society today. We are so quick to judge others while we should judge ourselves first. I don't normally highlight my books but when I restart this in the morning I'll be highlighting quotes to find in my finished copy.
It's not just about astrology and astronomy Romina writes amazing words to display how society treats outcasts.
I know this isn't a normal Ashley review but I promise readers Zodiac and Wandering Star are worth it. Even if the 15 month wait for Book 3 is going to kill me.

Goodies:
Enjoy this lovely Q&A session with the amazing Romina Russell:

Do you relate to your MC?
As a pragmatic, over-analytical, and impatient Virgo, I consider myself pretty different from Rho, a hardcore Cancrian who is far more impulsive, intuitive, and self sacrificing than I am! Yet while I don’t agree with her every decision, I understand Rho, and I can relate to her because even though we approach things differently, the same goals generally guide us. I think this separation helps me remain aware of Rho's full range of flaws and strengths—unlike another manuscript I’ve been writing for a decade whose protagonist is so much like me that I can’t finish her story!
What or who got you into writing?
I started writing poems and short stories when I was nine, inspired by my teacher's readings from Where the Sidewalk Ends. I’d just recently learned English—my family moved to the States from Argentina, so I was in ESOL classes my first few years of school—yet listening to Shel Silverstein’s stories was like hearing the language for the first time. I remember feeling wonderstruck by the beauty of sentences, and the way they could be arranged and rearranged to create any rhythm and awaken any emotion. I’ve been playing with words ever since.

Why YA as your genre?
I love reading YA because that’s often where I find the most honest literary characters. I love writing YA because as teens we're usually still susceptible to the world’s wonder. When we’re young, anything is possible—and more importantly, everything is changeable

Outside your book who would you “Ship” your MC with?

What is your favorite writing brain food?
I love sipping iced lattes while writing—but I’m not sure what this favorite brain food is actually doing to my brain… ;)
