Defiance by C.J. Redwine Review

Defiance by CJ Redwine

Cover:

Synopsis: (Found on GR)

While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.

When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father's apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

Cover: 5/5
Love this cover so much. Her red flaming hair just pops out from the black outfit and her pale skin. I guess the cuff is there just not where I feel like it should be. I also didn't really notice until writing this that the castle is at the bottom under her cape. The font for the title doesn't draw away from the model which is something I really like.

Characters: 5/5
Logan oh that man-boy I wanted to dislike him for turning away Rachel but he had his reasons. He is techy and does his best to protect Rachel even if she doesn't need it.
Rachel is the ideal badass best friend. When given the chance to escape she worries for those she will leave behind. She never gives up hope; for her father or Baalboden's freedom.

Plot: 5/5
There is a dragon so there was automatically .5pts there. The concept of having Protectors for Redwine's world perfectly. A single father raising a daughter is hard in our society so I can understand why Rachel came out so fiercely independent. The commander although a complete dictator does have one like able quality (don't shoot me). He cares enough about his city to not let the dragon bring fiery hell upon them.
Redwine's use of archaic terms adds uniqueness. "Courier" is a word that in our modern language replaced by words like delivery person or mailman.
The tree people are an interesting group and I hope in the rest of the series their story is told.

Overall: 5/5
I can't really find anything negative to say about Defiance. Logan and Rachel have great back stories. Every character has their flaws which makes them human. Can't wait to grab book 2 called Deception.

  1. Looks like I was already following via GFC, but I added BL just so I can make sure and catch your stuff.

I have this one in my possession, but I haven't read it yet. Ugh TBR list is forever long! I like how you broke down your ratings for each category. That's an awesome idea. After seeing your ratings, I might have to bump this one closer to the top of my list!
