When you’re caught in a traffic jam, you’ve got nowhere to go… Val Delton’s life is spiraling and there’s nothing she can do to stop it. Her dad lost his job, her mom works fourteen hour days to pay the bills and yet somehow there are high-end shopping bags and an iPod in her older sister’s room. Naturally, Val becomes suspicious but her sister’s lips are sealed. Then by accident, she uncovers a dark, dangerous secret hidden behind her sister’s bright smiles and cool indifference. Val has no idea how far and how deep the repercussions of her sister’s secret will reach but she’ll do whatever it takes to keep her family safe. Will she succeed before her sister’s secret destroys everyone she loves?
Review:
277 pages of pure loquacious words that sent my emotions on a rampage of; confusion, desire and happiness. This book touches on a sensitive issue and I was grateful for the way the author handled it. The main character Val was a relatable character that had common sense (shocker). Val is the perfect sister who cares for Sam greatly. Sam is the annoying preppy girl type that overruns my school but, she becomes likeable (read more to see what happens to Sam). There is a splash of romance that doesn`t distract too much from the overall plot. Val is determined to do the right thing and can hold her own when things get tough. Traffic Jam teaches about family, trusting, and telling the truth, even if it hurts. I have to wonder if this was based on a true event that either the author was involved in or someone close to her was involved in. Rumors spread through the high school (like in all high schools) and it is Val and Sam who have to stick up for their family. Sam comes clean-in a modified story-in order to protect those she loves. I think Sam at least saying something was better than running and letting Val fight her battles.
I cannot wait to read more by Melissa Groeling.
