My boyfriend and I went to Barnes and Noble and chose a book that had to meet our strict criteria. 1) Two-person point of views 2) Science related (him) 3) Romantic (me)
Across the Universe fit everything including a marvelous cover. It took several months to finish the book since we were reading out loud to each other. I behaved myself and didn’t read ahead as much as I wanted to see how Amy and Elder were going to interact. I believe the first sentence of a book is what truly draws you in along with if the cover catches your eye off the shelf.
Daddy said, “Let mom go first.” That first sentence made me want to read. After buying the book we sat down to read the first two chapters. For a Father to give his daughter a choice to never see them again had to be tough on his part. I think Amy made the right decision.
Then there is Elder sweet young Elder. He is merely a boy who is soon to rule over Godspeed spaceship taking the cryo passengers to Centarui-Earth. Elder is fascinated with Amy, eager to learn everything about Sol-Earth and run Godspeed.
I give this book:
Plot: 5/5 (A ship based on lies and a tyrant ruling over them, who wouldn’t pick up this book)
Character: 4/5 (Some of the other characters could have been described more in depth)
Cover: 3/5 (I like the fact Amy is standing at the eye of Godspeed but I feel as if the new covers add to the mechanical aspect of the ship more.)
